Well let me start of by saying what a difference a few years can make to this site and to all the scouts both from the Boy Scout Association and the Girls for the Girl Scout Association. It has been great to see all the children and young adult achive more than most people would of ever thought possable through the caring for and training of horses. I and the rest of the staff at Schuetz Farms can not say enough about all the great young adults that have chosen to take on the Horsemanship badge and completed successfully all of the requirements.
I would also like to say that from a scouts prospective the Horsemanship badge is one of the hardest badges to earn. This badge can not be done in one or two nights at the local troop meeting. This bage is one that requires the scout to first be able to excerise the knowledge on paper and then actually preform the task mounted on a horse. Well let me tell you horses have brains and sometimes the horse does not want to cooperate with the scout and the scout must have the knowledge not only to preform the task, but must also contain the knowledge to correct the horse if there is a miss behavior.
Because of the complexity of the bage I have found it best when your whole troop/den/unit work on the bage together as a group. Schuetz Farms is still a "real" wroking ranch. We are one of the last true horse farms you will find in the state of Illinois. Therefore, it is hard for the staff at the farm to assist with both the hands on and the "paperwork" portion of the badge. What we have found works best is if your group schedules about 5 group trips to the farm to discuss the paperwork portion and work on the prefection of the hands on skills.
If this sounds like something that would interest your group. Schuetz Farms would love to sponsor your group! Please feel free to email info@schuetzfarms.com for more information, or to setup a time. The farm is available Monday thru Saturday during the months of March thru November. This is a working ranch and Illinois winters can keep us hopping so we are closed to the public mid December thru February.
We hope that you find this site useful and can't wait to see you at the ranch!
